Ranfac Breast Orientation System

The Ranfac Breast Orientation System is designed for three-dimensional orientation of biologic specimen for review by the pathologist:

  • All Positive Margins Clearly Oriented for Directed Re-excision
  • Lumpectomy/Quadrantectomy Specimens
  • DCIS Positive Margins Are Precisely Oriented for Directed Wider Excision

Features:

There are three .030 wires designed to pierce the tissue sample completely through.

The wires have two notches, and can be easily broken by turning the wires 90 degrees. They should then be capped (with the plastic cap) to prevent inadvertent dislodgment.

The specimen system permits accurate, three-dimensional orientation of the specimen in varying sizes up to 12cm in diameter.

Applied correctly, the system provides automatic orientation and the standard designations recognized by pathologists are superior, inferior, posterior, anterior, medial and lateral.

Catalog:

  • # ROS – 12
Packaged sterile as a set of three: 10 sets per box.

OVERVIEW:
The order of needle passage is at the discretion of the surgeon.

  • “S” = Superior
The needle should be brought from the superior aspect of the specimen directly through its center, out the inferior aspect, adjusted for length and capped.

  • “P” = Posterior
The needle should be pierced from the posterior aspect of the specimen, through its center, out the anterior surface, adjusted for length and capped.

  • “M” = Medial
The needle should pierce the specimen on the medial aspect, through its center, out its lateral aspect, the wire adjusted for length and then capped.

Benefits:

Utilization of the system eliminates communication errors between the surgeon and the nurse, and transcription errors in the pathology department. It also permits immediate identification of the orientation by the pathologist for marking of margins, positive margins being particularly important when dealing with a malignancy.

Specimen mammography can be performed on the specimen with the wires intact, which allows for identification of close margins by the radiologist while the patient is still in the operative suite.
